GA4 & Conversion Tracking Setup Guide
Configure Google Analytics 4 with the right events and conversions from day one.
Overview
Google Analytics 4 is the foundation of all performance measurement. Without proper setup, you cannot accurately measure the impact of any marketing activity — including SEO.
This guide walks you through the essential GA4 configurations every business needs before investing in SEO. Proper setup now prevents data gaps and measurement errors later.
Complete this setup before your SEO engagement begins for the most accurate baseline data.
Setup Process
Step 1: Verify GA4 Property
Confirm your GA4 property is correctly installed and receiving data. Check Real-Time reports to verify active users are being tracked.
Why it matters: An improperly installed GA4 property means all subsequent data is unreliable or missing entirely.
Step 2: Configure Key Events
Set up key events for form submissions, phone calls, email clicks, and any other conversion actions that matter to your business.
Why it matters: Without event tracking, you can see traffic volume but cannot measure whether that traffic generates business outcomes.
Step 3: Mark Conversions
In GA4 Admin, navigate to Events and mark your key business events as conversions. This enables conversion tracking in all reports.
Why it matters: Conversion marking feeds into automated reports and allows you to measure ROI across channels, including organic search.
Step 4: Link Search Console
Connect your Google Search Console property to GA4. This enables organic search data directly within your analytics reports.
Why it matters: Linking GSC provides query-level data alongside behavior metrics, enabling deeper analysis of SEO performance.
What to Watch
After setup, verify these metrics are tracking correctly over the first 7 days.
| Metric | Expected Behavior | Issue Indicator |
|---|---|---|
| Active Users | Matches expected site traffic | Zero or abnormally low |
| Event Count | Events firing on actions | No events recorded |
| Conversion Rate | Within expected range | 0% or 100% (configuration error) |
